Your customers need the “why”. Why they should buy your brand. Why you are better than your competitors. Begin to stand out with the power of good brand storytelling!
Why brand storytelling?
Today’s fashion market is fiercely competitive. Simply showcasing products isn’t enough anymore. That’s where brand storytelling steps in. Throughout my career I realized how much it can help you. You are able to connect with your target audience on a higher level. It builds an emotional and meaningful connection. Therefore, it is a very powerful tool and indispensable for your brand identity.
You need to know what story you want your clothing, social media, website and even packaging to tell the customer. Consider every touchpoint as part of your brand story. Each element contributes to the brand’s overall narrative and reputation.
We live in a digital landscape dominated by social media. Storytelling has never been more crucial. Research indicates that stories are significantly more memorable than standard facts. Think about yourself. What would you rather remember? A brand that tells you about their 23345 stores? Or a brand that tells you what they have been through to achieve that?
Moreover, positive interactions with brands on social media platforms can significantly influence consumer behavior. Fostering loyalty and driving sales. Standing out gets increasingly challenging. So, if you aim to thrive, it is time to tell your story now.
How to start:
Your audience comes first.
Like you have already read in my last blog post: know your target audience! Especially when it comes to storytelling.
- Who are they?
- What are they afraid of?
- What drives them?
- Most importantly, why should they become your customers?
Before diving into storytelling, you need to address these questions.
In my own experience, it can help to first understand your current customers. Try to find out why they buy from you. Read reviews or do it through customer surveys. Find out what they could want, think, and feel about you.
Tell your origin story.
How did it all begin? Think about your true origin story. What inspired you to found this fashion brand? Was it a gap in the market? A personal need? Really think of the source of your brand. Write everything down you can think of. You need to understand your brand’s story before diving into promotional activities.
Your second thoughts should be all about your uniqueness. Depending on your fashion brand, this could be:
- Your design philosophy
- Sustainable aspects
- Innovative materials
- Customization
- Ethical manufacturing practices
Of course, this should embody your brand’s identity and values. Make sure everything is well-defined. Otherwise, you will possibly confuse your customers with unclear messages.
Visual brand storytelling.
Humans process visuals faster than text. So, if you want to be remembered, use visual elements for your story. Let your target audience see what you see.
It is probably no news for you that the fashion industry is one of the most visual industries. So, how can you keep up? In my experience, it is best to start with these three elements:
- Short-term videos: Use TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts to share your story through personality, products, and lifestyle.
- Long-form videos: Go into more detail on platforms like YouTube, share, for example, behind-the-scenes or stories about what you stand for.
- Photography: High-quality images to showcase your brand’s aesthetic and values.
Incorporate these elements into your storytelling to effectively engage your audience. I know it can be a lot at first, but it will pay off!
